Perdue Oven Ready Roasters

So, the good people at Bzz Agent asked me to try Perdue Oven Ready Roasters. The premise is good: prepared chicken products (roasters, breasts, cornish game hens, etc) in a cook-in bag. Just cook & eat.

I needed a quick, no-fuss dinner right before Thanksgiving, and used my free coupon to obtain the Oven Ready Cornish Game hens at Jack's Foodtown in Caldwell. Big shout-out to Jack's - they are a great store, their employees are friendly, and they were a huge help during the hurricane.

I wanted something I wouldn't have to prep or watch, so that I could concentrate on helping my daughter with her homework. I also wanted something healthy and full of protein, and chicken is one of my go-to items for a protein-filled dinner. When you've had any sort of weight-loss surgery, you know it's protein first.

The Oven Ready system is really quite simple.  Everything is pre-seasoned and in a roasting bag. All I had to do was turn on the oven, place them in a baking dish, and I was good to go. I'm always busy, I commute close to an hour each way, and I need all the time-savers I can get.  I will admit that I am often skeptical of pre-seasoned products because I'm not sure if they'll live up to what I know that I and my family like, but this did. I followed the directions on the bag and was rewarded with two very moist, tender and delicious cornish game hens. My daughter had never had cornish game hens before, and was curious. She's 9 and she thought they were terrific. I included a side of mashed potatoes and a quick salad, and we were good to go. The seasoning was delicate and didn't overpower the birds. The meat was very tender, and I really appreciated the fact that clean up was quick and easy. I was so impressed that I decided to pick up an Oven Ready roaster, and I will be trying that in the next couple of days. My husband and daughter were both very happy with dinner that night, and I liked the quality and the convenience. Hey, cornish game hens are good to serve for company, too!

The only deterrent would be price. It's about $10.00 retail for the Oven-ready products, so it's worth it if you have a coupon. Someone brought up the point that for less you can get a chicken already cooked, but most days I don't want to stop at the market on my way home. This is something I can keep in the fridge and just throw in.

I did buy a second product, an actual roaster, and put that in the fridge for another occasion. BzzAgent had given me some $2.00 and $3.00 off coupons, so I used one of the coupons to put towards this roaster.

Night before last I knew I would be running late getting home from work, so I called home and asked my husband to make dinner. I told him I had the Perdue Oven Ready Roaster in the fridge, and that we could have that. He said he'd give it a try, and I told him it was easy - all he had to do was follow the directions. He's not always big on following directions, so I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best.

He said it really was easy, he preheated the oven, put in the bird in the bag and followed the directions to a t. We (my husband, my daughter and I) all agreed that the chicken was moist, flavorful and a great dinner. We had some leftover mashed potatoes and vegetables that we were able to reheat and have with this, so it was definitely quick and easy.  Summary: Positives: Easy! Open it up, put the bag in the oven and you're good! Seasoning is just right, and quite delicious. Clean-up is incredibly easy. Just remove and throw away the bag. The pan stays clean. The entire family loved it. Negatives: Nothing major. I was a little swollen from the seasoning the next day, but I'm very sensitive and react to a lot of things.  All in all I'm very glad I had the opportunity to try this line of products from Perdue and I appreciate the time-saving qualities as well as the taste. I'll pick up some more.

Burt's Bees Intense Hydration

Recently I was given the opportunity to try some of the products in the Burt's Bees Intense Hydration Line. I received them through BzzAgent. I enjoy being a Bzz Agent because it's great to try new things and speak about them.

I'm hard to please when it comes to skincare products. I have good skin for someone my age (47) but I tend to be sensitive. Many products make my eyes water. Price doesn't matter - even the expensive stuff can trigger that reaction. I had a particularly bad bout of eye-watering from some Lancome products. I tend to stick with the Olay Regenerist line for that reason, I know they don't trigger any reactions.

I was looking forward to the Burt's Bees campaign from Bzz Agent because I'd heard many positive things about the Burt's Bees line. My mother-in-law loves it. The Intense Hydration line contains Clary Sage, which is supposed to be great as a natural moisturizer.

The kit included the Daily Creme Cleanser, the Intense Hydration Treatment Mask, and the Night Cream. I figured I'd give it a go, and jumped on in. It also included little samples of the day and night creams,  and coupons.

Well, I was disappointed. I loved the scent - very natural, very nice (and I'm picky about scent!) but both the night cream and the day cream were just too thick. They felt thick and waxy on my skin. The night cream was especially heavy, and made me look like one of those women in a 50s tv show with a face full of cream. Ick. Even worse, I had whiteheads the next morning. I'm 47, not 14, this is nuts.

The Treatment Mask was difficult to work with. It wasn't simple to get off, and was more of a hassle than I expected. I wouldn't use it again.

I did give a number of the samples to my mother-in-law, who loved them (she's 83) and to my friend Linda, who is my age. I'm fair-skinned but Linda is even lighter than I am, and she likes a lot of moisture. She felt that the night cream was perfect for her and was more than happy to take the coupons and samples. Everyone agreed that the scent was good, which was a big plus.

So, you win some, you lose some. I wasn't a fan but I discovered two people who were, so they were able to make good use of the samples. In reading the other reviews of the products, I found that most people did like the line, but some had the same complaints that I did. Not everything will be for everyone, right?

Macallan

Macallan is my dog, not the Scotch, although he was named for it. I found Macallan in October, 2011, at a rescue group in Nyack, NY. I'd lost my Scottie to old age & illness that past July, and I was hoping to find another great terrier rescue.

My friend Nathalie took that picture. Mac is adorable, as you can see. He doesn't act much like a terrier, though.
  • He doesn't dig
  • He exhibits a high level of separation anxiety
  • He doesn't play tug-of-war
  • He isn't very tenacious
  • He's not overly territorial
More often than not he'll give in to a cat and let one of them have whatever it is they want. I've seen the cats steal his food and he just sits there and watches. Mac has permanently attached himself to my husband, and he becomes agitated whenever my husband leaves the house. Even if we all go out in the car, the dog will freak if my husband gets out to buy something. He's very insecure but very loving. Occasionally he'll do something terrier-like, like chase prey. He once caught a squirrel and two baby geese. That didn't thrill me but hey, at least he's exhibiting some terrier behavior.

I decided to look into DNA testing. I didn't want to spring for the most expensive blood test, so I chose a regular test on Amazon. I went with Wisdom Panel Insights, and for about 50.00 they sent me Mac's supposed genetic make-up.

Macallan is 3/4 Miniature Schnauzer, 1/4 naughty assailant.
The 75% that isn't Miniature Schnauzer is made up of:

    • Labrador Retriever  15.86%
    • Dachshund  6.73%
    • Flat-coated Retriever 3.49%
    • Sussex Spaniel  2.46%
    • Briard  2.07%
A friend has a labrador who acts quite a bit like Mac, so maybe some of his behavior  is a lab trait.

We love the little guy!

Blogging about what I've tried

I like to try out a lot of new things, and sometimes I'll talk about the tried and true. You never know what you'll hear from me. I'm Mom to two - my son is 27, my daughter is 9 and I've been married wayyyy too long.

So, what do I like? I like to read (bet you didn't see that coming from a librarian), I like to bake and decorate cakes & cookies, and I enjoy spending time with the people I love. Gatherings of any sort are usually fun for me, and I like to entertain. I love to take pictures although I'm not an accomplished photographer, and I especially love taking pics of my critters.

One of the things that I like to do is act as a tester for products. I joined BzzAgent for that reason, and I'll list my product reviews here as well.

So why should you trust my reviews?
  • I'm honest. I don't bs.
  • I'm a librarian, therefore I research everything
  • I'm an everyday, busy mom who works full-time, so if I'm recommending it, it has to be a good time-saver or life-enhancer.

So what's on my schedule for today? I'm disconnecting my old gas stove and giving it away. Dinner will probably be hamburgers, and I'm going to start getting things ready for Saturday's party at a friend's house.
