Today I took the husband for his inaugural colonoscopy & endoscopy. He's a few years past the 50 mark, so it's about time. I told him to make sure to tell the doctor that he needed an endoscopy as well because he has reflux.
We rode out to the surgicenter first thing this morning, and filled out the paperwork. If you're going, remember that you need a designated driver. You will undergo anesthesia for these procedures. We arrived before 8AM and waited until about 8:45 for them to come get him. The waiting room was nicely appointed with wifi, a multi-function coffee machine and a tv (which I promptly tuned out). I was glad I had my laptop with me.
At 10:30 the nurse came out to get me, and the husband was already sitting up in a chair. Turns out he was a bit loopy when he came out of the anesthesia and insulted the doctor & nurses about their choice of discussion topic: Taylor Swift. Lance's first thought, which flew out of his mouth, was: "are you people serious? You sound like my 9 year old. Can't you find something more intelligent to discuss?" Tact wasn't his strong point at that moment! It's like when he's drunk and he starts cursing in Spanish, I don't know where it comes from.
So, what were the results? The colonoscopy revealed one polyp which was removed and biopsied, and it's benign. That's great. The endoscopy showed that he has a ring of scar tissue from reflux, and has to be very careful. He'll start taking prilosec now. His Dad died from esophageal cancer, so it's definitely a worry.
The poor guy was hungry after more than 24 hours without food, so I took him to the Union Plaza Diner for breakfast before heading home. The moral of the story: get scoped and then I'll buy you food.
